A Story of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Floor
Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, however when I arrived, a major event was happening and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could bed down in the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, is not open around the clock. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering towards a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the evening in a place operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed confused as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if I was OK. I shared my situation and immediately she suggested I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my my medical school interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided some food: one filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I was able to use the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest to sleep.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she took as a young woman allowing a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my own unawareness and was oblivious about things like that. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain very grateful.
I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has rewarded her generosity many times over. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
