This occurred on a day of rest, and I found myself sufficiently irritable, filling up the family car. It was a typical gas station that doubles as a convenience store, meaning there's a chance of joining a queue customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. A terrible fate to occur when all you want is to complete a simple refueling. Dreadful.

Fourth in line I stood in the waiting line. There was only employee working, a female attendant. Something stood out in her demeanor. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had at last settled for his purchases, a baked snack, and a carton of eggs, It seemed to me that I heard the cashier bid him a wonderful day. Odd. Could be I misunderstood, or perhaps she spoke and meant it ironically. I pondered if she could even be a supporter in my battle with dithering, echoing my disdain for individuals slowing down people just getting gas including me.

Taking a step forward, now third in line. The next shopper of our line discharged her fuel-only transaction with commendable speed. And there it was again: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” In fact, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. A stateside native? At this location? The pronunciation indicated it, and few locals says to others a wonderful day, or simply a good day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find people from America visiting this town, least of all working in petrol stations or other places.

Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper embroiled in a protracted effort with her shopping cart, her purchases, her wallet and her membership pass. This took an eternity. When she was done, she as well got told a wonderful day. Clearly an American. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark in her direction, to check for that thing their typical stare, without a smile, and say with absolute sincerity: “You are very amusing.” Yet no idea came of a jest to say.

In the end, I embraced the heartfelt tone – or a performance of it, which amounts to no different – with which she looked directly into my eyes, deep into my soul, and told me an awesome day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
