Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
