Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Forged the Contemporary Globe
One can find numerous contenders for the designation as “planet’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the mechanised sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical saw, which turned logs to planks using almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to build vessels faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, economic as well as artistic dominance in the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s first true industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A single part converted its circular movement to vertical motion for the cutting blade. Another component transformed the spinning movement into a sideway’s movement advancing the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log ahead one precise increment per cycle.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them in order that the machine acted in a perfectly controlled order, cutting with each downward stroke and advancing on every upward motion. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent use of basic components.”
A fact that brings us to today’s challenge. I’d like you to reimagine one of the fundamental concepts behind this historic invention.
Round and Up
Construct a mechanism which converts circular movement to up-and-down motion. You have these components only: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two rods. A “sleeve”, that is a cylinder or housing into which one of the rods will fit snugly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a stand, so that the components don’t collapse.)
