Disney's Real-Life Moana Trailer Looks Strikingly Like a Animated Film

The debut preview for the forthcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has been released. Is it surprising that, like many of Disney's live-action remakes, it appears a lot like an animated film and much less like a genuine film with real actors?

Spectacular Visuals That Keep an Cartoonish Look

The trailer for the latest version of Moana is undeniably stunning. It includes grand visuals, gorgeous soundtrack, and familiar characters. Yet, it also appears like an animated film. The over-the-top effects depict characters soaring, water acting unnaturally, and Maui changing into an insect and a winged creature. All of this is accomplished through computer-generated imagery and computer animation. Similar to previous Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the level of CGI is so extensive that it raises the debate: what makes these movies “live-action” besides the marketing label?

Story and Music Fans Adore

Regardless, this latest Moana seems to be a reimagining of the original story, complete with new renditions of the cherished musical numbers. As described in an released summary, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an memorable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”

Fresh Cast and Returning Faces

Meanwhile, the teaser features a snippet of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The young actor is stepping into the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the heroine in the original films.

A key figure who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be portraying Maui. Naturally, that role already looked like Johnson, so casting him in the live-action version appears logical.

Fan Favorite Mascot Makes an Appearance

Perhaps the most important moment of the preview comes in the final shot. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei shows up, screaming at the camera. How else to introduce the movie’s real icon?

Release Date

The real-life take of Moana arrives in theaters on July 10, 2026.
