Folly and Regal Arrogance Damaged Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet

This episode commenced with a solitary photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.

In the frame appeared the Duke of York, arm-in-arm a young woman, while an associate beamed conspiratorially in the rear.

Absent that snapshot, captured at a social event in 2001, few would have credited the allegations of a teenager who said she was moved across the Atlantic and forced to have cursory relations with a prince of the monarchy?

A curious, revealing move by someone who had publicly stated to have never heard of her, asserted he could not have had relations with her, and yet handed over millions of monarchical funds to avert a protracted legal case.

Over a Decade of Controversy

Considering this, talk of the monarchy acting decisively to cut Andrew off are misguided. This scandal has persisted for the largest portion of 15 years since that photograph, and an additional image of Andrew strolling congenially with a notorious individual came to light.

  • Arrogance: For what duration did his family members, possibly even his relatives, understand that Andrew was so self-entitled?
  • Dubious Friendships: They must have realized, if his staff and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable companions given he publicly invited them to palaces.
  • Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the household did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his extravagance with taxpayer funds.

Travel were listed in official documents: chopper travel from the royal residence to a country club and back again in time for midday meal, chartered planes instead of commercial flights, all for the comfort of "the travel enthusiast".

A Life of Privilege

Furthermore the presumption which demanded subservience when he entered a room or the supreme consciousness about his honorifics used on his correspondence in communication to his personal acquaintances.

He avoided accountability while his matriarch, who unaccountably pampered him, was still living. The monarch did at least strip him of royal responsibilities and honorary colonelcies in the wake of his ill-fated and, it is now clear, mendacious media appearance six years ago.

Current Situation

It was only in the last two weeks that events accelerated, following the release of biographical works giving more grim particulars of his actions and that of his companions.

More information have again revealed Andrew's assumption that he could escape deceiving about his contact with a disgraced individual.

Society (and the press) were far more perceptive of the royal family. There was no one of any significance to defend him, a outcome of all those years of hubris.

Institutional Fears

The wiser family members recognized that. The key objective is to hand down the crown, if not as before at least intact and untarnished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to reverse the reputation of earlier rulers, proving they are useful, responsible and reactive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in danger in an era when submission and privacy is no longer sufficient.

The Fallout

Ultimately, the well-known hesitant king was prodded additional. There was no other option. The royal household had surrendered command of the narrative.

Presently the loss of honorifics and the persistent and life-long social disgrace that will afflict Andrew most severely.

  • Demotion: Demoted to just a commoner
  • Prior Instance: The primary royal to surrender his designations in recent history
  • Naval Career: Notably stinging given his role in the Falklands war

He is still a counsellor of state, in principle able to act for the sovereign, and he is still eighth in line to the crown, but not any of these will truly happen.

Coming Developments

Can persons he meets still defer to him? Will they still slip up and call him Your Highness? Will they even say Andrew,

Naturally, he is not moving to suburbia, but to the monarchy's large estate at Sandringham.

At that location, he will be furnished by the king with one of the estate properties and given some sort of private allowance.

It is not his former home, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit remote, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Pending Matters

This is not over. There are still documents in the hands of overseas authorities to be disclosed.

  • Political Pressure: Might parliament seek further action
  • Fiscal Review: Or examine the waste of public money
  • Criminal Investigation: There may even be a criminal probe into his actions

Perhaps for the time being the harm to the monarchy to the monarchy is restricted. The narrative from the palace was evidently that the stripping of titles was what the king, and especially other senior monarchical figures, wanted.

A Shift in Position

An end to deception that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, significantly, the concise announcement showed clearly that the institution were aligning with the accuser's version of events.

Furthermore, for the first time they finally showed consideration for the survivors: "These actions are deemed necessary, despite the fact that he maintains his innocence of the accusations against him."

In the end it is presumption, self-interest and laziness that will undermine the institution. In his foolishness, personal excess and greed, Andrew appears never to have learned that lesson.
