Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
