International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official confirmed that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into areas of Gaza currently controlled by IDF control to support the search for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Agreements and Captive Bodies Return

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

The organization has so far handed back the bodies of 15 of those held captive but none in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are believed to be in areas beyond the yellow line designating the temporary truce line.

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the Red Cross joined a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” said a representative for the committee.

She added: “Those involved to the conflict established the modalities of the operation and delegated the ICRC to serve as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was not involved in those negotiations.”

She further explained: “Our team was did not participate in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it engage in the physical recovery of remains.”
