Larian Studios Details Its Implementation of Machine Learning for New Project

The developer behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just teased its new project, generating a wave of excitement within the player base. However, follow-up comments from the studio's figurehead have introduced a new dimension to the discussion, focusing on the developer's approach toward machine learning.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a recent statement, the studio's founder explained that the developer is using generative AI for particular ancillary functions. These include developing PowerPoint slides, generating initial artistic references, and writing draft dialogue.

Notably, Vincke made clear that the final material in the game will be authored entirely by human artists. "Our team is developing everything in-house," he said.

We are constantly increasing our team of writers and are currently putting together writing teams.

Since concept art is being explicitly mentioned — we currently have over twenty concept artists and have roles to fill for additional artists.

All our efforts we do is additive and aimed at enabling creatives to spend more time on the creative process.

Any AI system used well is additive to a developer's process, not a replacement for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The news of employing this technology at first provoked backlash among portions of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke provided further elaboration on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes these tools to gather inspiration, similar to we use the internet and physical media," he explained. "During the conceptual planning process we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then swap out with hand-crafted illustrations."

He noted, "Our studio recruits creatives for their creative vision, not for their willingness to replicate what a AI generates."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had previously broken down the team's focused strategy to AI and ML, defining its use into key functions:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This encompasses polishing mocap data, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to quickly build basic models of mechanics to validate concepts prior to complete implementation.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Researching how AI could eventually facilitate innovative player agency, especially in simulating player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.

He specifically stated that central narrative areas — including writing — are are in no way fields where the studio is reducing human input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these very roles.

"Larian is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering cutting staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
