Countless people in Uganda are showing their joy in the newly elected mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani, who was a native of Uganda and maintains two passports.
Several have described him as part of their community, saying he inspires them.
One reporter who guided him during his youthful work experience at a major Ugandan publication informed that there was great enthusiasm in Uganda about Mamdani's achievement especially because of his youth. The country has the second-lowest median age worldwide of just under seventeen, according to available data.
Zohran, thirty-four, is the offspring of Prof Mahmood Mamdani, a respected Ugandan intellectual, while his mother, Mira Nair, is an celebrated movie maker.
First Encounters
Writer Izama recalled that the new mayor was initially shy while they collaborated, but was completely committed to accomplish tasks.
He says Zohran is deeply connected with Uganda's capital, which he often mentions.
Zohran's father was educated in Uganda and worked for more than a decade at the country's main university, the country's main and oldest university. He encountered his wife in the capital while she was studying Mississippi Masala, a production about the expulsion of Asians from Uganda under the former leader.
Prof Mamdani is recognized for his anti-colonialist scholarship, which studies the consequences of imperialism in the African continent and its effect on leadership, cultural identity and fairness.
University Reactions
Makerere University professor Professor Ogwang says he feels great about Zohran's success, characterizing him as the son of a colleague. He's one of our own.
Our representative is there, he shared.
This creates confidence that the children we are raising are the future of our planet. Across the African continent... we are overlooking the most valuable asset we have - young people.
Student Reactions
While several people had not known about Zohran until his success, a young scholar at the college said people were quite pleased, saying it proved that anyone could rise above their background.
This offers encouragement, specifically for the younger generation, said Abno Collins Kuloba. No matter your background, whether wealthy or disadvantaged, you can achieve great things, like what Zohran has achieved.
One more attendee, Zamzam, said she was pleased, for personally and compatriots. She said Zohran was an encouragement to her as a youth, as this demonstrates we can become anything we want as long as we maintain confidence and dedication.
Continental Celebration
The recently elected leader is also being recognized across Africa.
An Ethiopian commentator, an Ethiopian who is a previous international representative, describes the professor as a respected intellectual of continent's political landscape, a man who questioned power and justice.
He says having been acquainted with Zohran from childhood, he views him as having inherited his father's dedication to African unity, his parents' bravery in independent thought, and their conviction that one can feel at home anywhere.
He emphasizes Zohran's rise is meaningful and functional especially to young Africans, encouraging them to draw from him lessons in governance.
I think through him, the strength and appeal of multi-ethnic, multi-religious identity came to light. Meanwhile, the continent is mostly a multi-ethnic and a multi-religious society, he says.
He notes that as Zohran has demonstrated, youth need to organize and build public involvement and prevent discouragement and fury.

The nation is holding elections in the coming year, with 81-year-old President Museveni seeking another term after nearly four decades in leadership.
The family also spent around three years in Cape Town, after Mahmood was selected the leader in African Studies at the UCT in the nineties.
Numerous South African citizens have also been applauding his historic election.
Praising his victory as a remarkable achievement, the cleric of the Claremont mosque, Imam Omar, said that Mamdani's youthful period were molded, partially, in the mosque community.
He said that Zohran began his Islamic education at the place of worship, and began his education at the local school.
This provides encouragement to observe how Zohran's early South African experiences, though modest, left permanent marks on his public service mindset and helped shape his innovative, local-focused method to governance, the imam stated.
As South African social justice activists, we can now draw lessons from his experience, how to practise progressive politics that appeals to the youth and builds bridges across ethnicity, economic status, and religion, he added.
Political Recognition
The political party, the notable organization in the country which advocates for left-wing economic policies, also hailed Zohran's victory as significant.
His election demonstrates both a significant change for the people of New York but also a powerful signal to the world that forward-thinking equitable governance is rising even in the core of international finance, the group commented in a release.
In the country, a Christian pastor who is a supporter of Tinubu also applauded Mamdani's achievement.
Atañi stated that Nigeria cannot be threatened by President Trump, whose comments could not subdue the 34-year-old Zohran.
