The direst projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by researchers, ranging from a scorching 4C rise in temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in ocean levels. Another scenario envisions a drop of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy needs.

Plausible Events, Not Forecasts

These impacts, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are viewed as unlikely but plausible. The team said that these projections filled a gap in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," stated the lead researcher who directed the analysis. "The UK has been planning without the tools to assess catastrophic outcomes. We've now given policymakers what they need to get ready for environmental results they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Suite of Harsh Climate Scenarios

A second set of worst-case scenarios details the possible scale of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple typical amounts.

The chance of the catastrophic events occurring remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what steps will be implemented to address global heating and how the planet's climate will react. This analysis was described as similar to security threat evaluations or stress tests for the banking sector.

Major Scenario Details

  • Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action breaks down or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon basin becoming a net carbon source release its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heatwaves and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is weakening and becoming unstable due to climate change. A full shutdown starting around 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and water supplies would be fundamentally reshaped," said the lead researcher.
  • Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if polar ice in Greenland and Antarctica collapse rapidly, submerging low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already recognized by infrastructure experts.
  • Aerosol Effect: Temperatures could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is sharply cut. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from industrial activity block sunlight from reaching the ground.

Planning for the Extreme

The worst-case scenarios could be utilized in planning the construction of long-term infrastructure, including expanded cities, power generation facilities and water management networks. Knowledge about these future hazards could also speed the push to reduce carbon pollution.

The analysis formulated the severe projections using a blend of real-world events, computer simulations and established principles. The scenarios omit potential global problems including the devastation of food supplies and resource wars.

This work was initiated as part of a government’s climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have warned that too little consideration was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

The government's climate advisors has recommended that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and examine the threats for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "insufficient" by some observers.

A national response said: "The climate emergency is at the core of our national priorities, both preparing for impacts and becoming a clean energy superpower. It is essential that the UK is ready for the effects."
