The attack happened on Monday morning when an bomb planted beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Pattern of Assaults

Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been targeted within Moscow.

This new event follows other serious incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a Ukrainian source in the past attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are never formally acknowledged as a matter of official stance.

The conflict has increasingly seen clandestine operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still active.
