The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit series reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Fan Response
It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
