Beyond celebrating video games in different award categories, The Game Awards in the past showcased a Future Class. Individuals chosen as part of the Future Class were meant to represent the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of video games, akin to how other yearly lists feature key figures. Yet, this initiative is going away, according to program organizers.
Beyond Simply Honor: The Role of Future Class
The program was not just a tribute to exceptional figures in the gaming industry. It acted as a nexus for career networking and professional growth. Although a number of participants shared gratitude for being part of the program, others felt that it was insufficient for its members. Criticism targeted multiple aspects of the program, ranging from the lack of assistance to be present at the ceremony to providing no compensation for advising new inductees.
Recent Controversy and Program Suspension
The program was paused in the current year, when TGA did not include the recognition from its schedule. This absence came after a previous year issue where a number of those in the program signed a open letter calling on the show to employ its stage to advocate for a humanitarian situation.
"We were given the role of representatives of a improved world — accordingly, our obligation towards you and all the players globally drives us to speak out," the message read.
It additionally claimed that the gaming industry often dehumanized Black and brown people, and challenged developers in the industry to improve.
Formal Confirmation and Online Updates
While this is the second consecutive year that TGA has not selected a Future Class cohort, program organizers had not formally declared its end before. The omission has been observed, in part, due to the obvious erasure of any mention of Future Class on the the event’s online portal. The key organizer has not yet replied to a request for a statement.
TGA 2025 are planned for the 11th of December.
