The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
