One young woman hopes for being with her relatives during the festive period, but notes one of the only ways she'll endure is by relying on her earplugs - especially during Christmas dinner.

In her case, the holidays often feels like a notably tough season as the auditory triggers of people eating, slurping and nose-blowing cause her extremely uncomfortable.

"I experience this wave of immediate anxiety, my whole body will just freeze and it seems as if I'm in peril, and I need to manage these noises."

Lottie has lived with sound sensitivity from a young age and for her that causes the festive season "incredibly overwhelming".

Misophonia is a reduced tolerance to particular auditory triggers, notably sounds produced by individuals.

She explains her sensitivity is more intense around people she's most familiar with, so Christmas is always "difficult".
