The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
