Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
