For countless people anticipate indulging in beloved holiday foods, the picture is quite different for professional footballers.

Even at Christmas, maintaining peak fitness and ensuring proper recovery for forthcoming games is still crucial.

A Healthier Festive Approach

Private chef Tommy Cole, who prepares meals for top-flight footballers throughout the year, takes a classic but modified method for the holiday dinner.

"We aim for a 'boujee-r' and more nutritious take," he explains.

Important changes include being mindful with cooking fats for dishes such as crispy potatoes and stuffings, and selecting less fatty portions of meat.

"Turkey breast is favoured over the darker, richer cuts," the chef explains, "along with plenty of vegetables."

Powering the Packed December Schedule

December is notoriously hectic for major clubs, with a congested calendar of domestic games, European fixtures, and cup ties.

"With athletes competing often around Christmas, we adjust to provide the necessary fuel," says Cole.

This typically involves increased carbohydrate intake—like additional potatoes, rice, and comparable items—to maintain stamina.

Clever Dietary Tricks

To enhance vitamin consumption, vegetables are a key component. For athletes hesitant to eat their greens, the chef employs tricks.

"One method is flavourful sauces with a vegetable base," he suggests. "An example is katsu curry sauce, made from onions, carrots, and garlic."

For post-match recovery, foods like oily fish, nuts, and seeds are prioritized.

An Unexpected Journey into the Kitchen

Tommy's path to cooking was unexpected. "I didn't have a childhood aspiration to be a chef," he reveals.

Working a season abroad sparked his interest, leading to formal training and subsequently preparing meals for high-profile clients.

His popular TikTok videos have garnered millions of views fascinated by player diets.

Simple Requests and Post-Christmas Meals

Over eight years, he has received quirky orders. "Some have asked for simple hot dogs," he notes, "which seems pretty average."

For Boxing Day, classic dishes return. "We typically serve bubble and squeak full of plenty of greens—that good stuff."

A festive food spread

In summary, while the festive menu for players is tailored for peak athletic output, the aim remains the same: providing nutritious and tasty food throughout the holidays.
