The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his victory in November.

"This decision was based on our family's safety and the importance of focusing all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
